Play Date
Nearby Gallery in Newton Center presented Play Date, vibrant large scale paintings and sculpture by Jai Hart and Adria Arch. With high key color, pattern and sly references to social barriers, playgrounds, and theater sets, this work gives voice to our communal need to connect.
Arch’s sculptural groupings comprise human-scaled painted modular constructions suggesting personalities or imaginary characters to be reckoned with. The angular stacked carved plastic layers are enhanced with a range of craftily disguised materials including aluminum foil, fabric and foam. Brave color and active paint strokes and drips seduce while cut shapes invite peeking. These sculptural “visitors” congregate, perhaps exchanging opinions or sharing secrets.
